Social networking: be social

Let’s face it. These are difficult times for the adult industry. The “easy money days” are over and it does not look like they will be coming back.
In my personal opinion the slow economy is only part of the problem. As I see it, the changing Internet and as a result the changing surfer is.

*Back to basics*
In many ways we seem to be back in the 1990s. Surprised? Sure you are. Well, take another look and you may not be that surprised anymore.

If you were around in the 1990s you will have faced the trouble of having to explain how the Internet (and sometimes even a computer) worked. And although the
Internet isn’t new anymore and very well spread, surfers very much are new to Internet. Simply because there are so many new options, many of which nobody has ever heard of. Let alone has experience with.

Besides, the vast majority of Internet users are not on a high profile, superfast, modern machine-with-super-plasma-screen. Would you believe some 14 to 15 percent of your visitors may actually still be using a dial-up modem?

Most surfers behave on the Internet with, what I call, “backyard behavior”. Meaning that they will be using very limited options and will only use what they feel
comfortable with. This will be MSN and a few sites they more or less “know”. I.e. they stay within the trusted boundaries of their own back yard and are unlikely to
open the gate and really explore the world. The average surfer is not spending hours on Google exploring the virtual world. Instead they are much more likely to go to
sites that their neighbors, co-workers, the media or friends tell them about. And they will use these over and over again, while hardly leaving the safety of their own bookmarks list.

*Buzzwords versus reality*

The industry is overwhelmed by buzzwords. “Social networking” is one of them, “blogs” is another. Not mention “go mobile”, “tubing” or “video blogging”.
Well, let be burst some bubbles here.

MySpace has millions and millions of users. So has Facebook. None of these millions are surfing the millions. Let alone talk to them. The vast majority of social networks members use these networks to communicate with people they already know anyway: schoolmates, neighbors, family, friends, you name it. The average social network user has between 25 and 50 “friends”.

Adult networks aren’t any better. I spent quite some time researching XPeeps for example. Well, here is the none-scientific outcome of this research.

* I have an XPeeps profile with some 9,000 “friends”.
* More than fifty percent of these haven’t used their Xpeeps profile
since 2007 or even 2006. I.e., these profiles are abandoned and
dead. Any attempt to do any promotion in that area will fail. It
will never be seen.
* This leaves 4,500 “friends”, most of whome haven’t used their
profile in the last three months! In other words, if still active
at all that activity is about as exciting as the activity of a
koala bear on a hot day!
* Similar “research” on RedLightDistrict shows similar results.

*But it gets worse!*

Of course I have highly “promotional” profile, with all the right pictures - in my case girls in bondage. Guess what? I attract a significant number of lesbians
that do not want to make friends with guys. Why? because my profile avatar is a girl in ropes. I.e.: many people never actually read profiles, but just go for the
pretty face in the picture. More promotional time and effort wasted. I am not kidding you when I tell you that this 56 y.o. tattooed GUY got an email from some guy
asking me if I wanted to carry his child!

Want the truth about blogs? People don’t read them and if they do most will read only the first two lines at best. if you have pretty pictures or nice clips in
your blog they’ll look at those, but that’s it - most of the time.

*So what do you do?*

They keyword is - and always has been - niche marketing. Know your usergroups, locate their hang outs on the net and most importantly: BE ONE OF THEM!
If you have a fetish site, be a fetishist. Talk to them, speak their speak, learn the lingo, integrate and as a result become their trusted resource for information,
pictures, movies or whatever else it is you are selling!

The only Unique Selling Point for an adult site is: YOU! Or the person you created. If it isn’t you, create a virtual persona that will be your site icon. Maybe
create diiferent personae if you cater more than one group. And THEN start to network.

No, that is not the quick and easy “two mouseclicks away from millions of traffic” approach. It’s hard work and it’s labor intensive. But it gets you loyal, returning customers that are likely to become ambassadors for your site over time!

Are SPAM Filters Secretly Hurting…

Every morning I look at my spam folder in Outlook and I see 300+ emails. I also know that our mail server also has a filter [set to a low setting] since the spam folder used to have 800+ emails. In other words, our mail is scanned before it’s accepted by the mail server, and then again at my PC’s spam filter. So, it makes me wonder how many emails a year I may be missing; legitimate business email communications that may have been trapped by the spam filters. If this is happening on occasion, and I did not respond the legitimate email, it is likely interrupted as avoidance or rejection.

What’s the solution?

The first question… How much email am I missing on an annual basis? The reality is, it has to be happening. On occasion, someone with whom I was communicating, tells me they just sent me an email; an email that never turned up in my IN box. Upon investigating, it appears it was routed to my SPAM folder. I then ‘unmark’ it, and like most people, I get busy with other issues and move on. And if it’s happening to me, it is likely happening to you as well.

I noticed in someone’s email that there was a message about SPAM. It said that spam was so out of hand that if you did not get a response, to please let him know as he always responds to his email. So clearly, this is not an issue unique with me.

Any suggestions on a solution, other than the obvious that times have changed, and everyone should be manually going through their SPAM folder every morning, checking it twice and then clearing it out? I am 100% sure that others would value your thoughts on this subject of how to prevent a loss of business due of the animals in the Internet Jungle who cannot stop spamming. Do share…

Obscenity Cases Making the News

Lately it seems there have been more and more obscenity cases showing up in the news these days. If your not aware, MaxHardcore was convicted on 10 federal counts of distributing obscene materials. Most of the charges are related to the “transporting” of obscenity through the mail and via the internet. He is of course appealing the conviction but nonetheless, charges have been levied against him.

In another case involving a site called Red Rose Stories, a stories only site, the FBI had charged the site owner with what was being called “obscenities”. The site publishes stories on very controversial subjects such as bestiality, slavery, scat/pee, pedophelia and other taboo scenes. Seems the site owner wanted no parts of a trial and copped a deal in exchange for a guilty plea to save herself jail time.

Early in the year the case against Evil Angel and John Stagliano took shape. The Justice Department brought Stagliano and his company up on charges of “operating an obscenity distribution business”. Again, these charges stem from distribution through the mail and via the internet. The case still awaits a trial but there will be one it seems.

So, you ask why we write about this. Well we think it’s very important for adult webmasters to pay close attention to these types of cases and protect themselves accordingly. Some adult business owners are willing to take chances with border line niches or topics that are very controversial. To do this you must have a good lawyer and deep pockets to make sure you have the means to defend yourself.

For the basic adult webmaster the suggestions above are not an option. That being said it’s very easy to keep yourself off the radar of law enforcement such as the FBI, Justice Department or any of the other porn busting agency out there. The number one way to do that is too keep your content in line with “mainstream” type images, stories and videos. That means staying away from controversial porn such as bathroom play, extreme topics like fisting, beastiality, pedophilia and the like. Also make sure that if your displaying images and videos you keep in line with 2257 laws which also are in the process of being updated. If you don’t know what 2257 is search it or check out our site http://www.adultchamber.com for more info.

If you run a free site it’s best to keep your pages as softcore as possible. Not only does it keep you out of legal troubles but also helps with the upsell to more hardcore content, which is of course what most site owners are trying to accomplish. Webmasters who run pay sites or membership options can keep their hardcore porn behind password protection which is another layer of security from legal ramifications.

In closing, we should all understand that there are risks involved in this business no matter how careful you are or how closely you follow the law. Simply because we promote a controversial type of entertainment it makes us all a target. How close you want to come to crossing the line between “entertainment” and “obscenity” is totally in your control. Choose wisely!

Taking the bull by the horns…

By Marc L., President of AdultChamber

As webmasters, our websites age; links to pages within, and links to other sites, sometimes get disconnected. We have our own jobs to do, and we focus on them day in, and day out. What I want to discuss here is “Website Updating”.

Here at Adult Chamber, we have six to seven full-time employees who all work at our office in Boca Raton, Florida. We have two Unix System Administrators, a high-end Website Developer and programmer, two Internet marketing specialists who handle SEO and SEM (Search Engine Optimization and Marketing), etc. One would think that if a company ran three or four websites, with so many dedicated people, the sites would always be up to date. But the reality is, with tens of thousands of web pages, new items being implemented every week, and a recent changeover to a Content Management System (CMS), along with the reality that we create websites for new and seasoned adult webmasters, it is so easy to forget about existing pages and links; allowing them to age.

So, what is one to do to fix the website ageing issues?

Here at AdultChamber, we have assigned two employees to address outstanding issues and spend a solid week cleaning up what was invisible to our eyes, yet clearly a growing problem. Staff changeover is a reality and it never helps website aging issues. Not everything one knows can be communicated to an existing or new employee, and when weeks pass, website aging issues become noticeable. If not addressed, outstanding issues would become so obvious; it would scar our name and reputation.

So here we are taking the bull by the horns, spending the man-hours needed to fix issues that need to be addressed. It’s painful, time consuming, and an overall pain in the ass. But, it has to get done!
When was the last time you asked someone to go to your website and to sign up? When was the last time you read those pages in the sign-up process, or re-read the email one gets after they sign up? Is it current? Can it be improved?

Share your thoughts on this sometimes troubling subject…
